Tutoring Classes

This post will talk about the internal assessment (IA) for the International Baccalaureate (IB) math classes Applications and Interpretations Standard Level (AI SL).

Tutoring Classes. Many students do not like the IA because the IB program is just saying: “do math” they do not tell the students what they need to do. Students in general would rather just be told what to do: like: here is a worksheet, do these problems. The good thing is that for math AI SL you can kind of do a copy paste of some ideas that have already been done. Take a look at this sample: it is a little older but still a good template:

AI SL sample IA pdf download

In the sample you will see they they did cars and compared their weight and consumption. So what you can do for your IA is just pick to other variables that are related, many students get data from Gap minder: https://www.gapminder.org/data/

In the above web site pick any two date sets that you know are related. Like GDP and greenhouse gas emissions etc. Then do math that you have learned in AI SL about those data sets: linear regression, outliers, spot a scatter diagram, correlation coefficient. etc.

It is easier for you to do a copy paste of the format and type of math in the sample than trying to come up with math on your own. There are not really points awarded for creativity and being different. The IA needs to be 12 pages minimum, but 20 pages maximum. So write yours to try and be 20. You want it to be all math if possible. Use Microsoft Word, in that program there is an equation writter. Make it look like a math text book, the more professional.
