This post will talk about the English Individual Oral (IO). This is part of the assessment for the international baccalaureate (IB). English Language A, Language and Literature higher level and standard level. The IO is:

Prepared oral response on the way that one literary work and one non-literary body of work studied have
approached a common global issue. First the first step is to make a list of the literary and non-literary works you have studied in class. Then try and see a global issue that connects both.

Some sample Global Issues could be:

  1. How unattainable social constructs of beauty lead to self-hatred (as explored in The Bluest Eye and The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty).
  2. How xenophobia and discrimination have detrimental effects on people’s sense of identity self-worth (as explored in The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Homecoming King).
  3. How social pressures lead to mental health issues (as explored in Inside and Sylvia Plath’s poetry).
  4. How young individuals learn to stick up for themselves in the face of war and fascism (as explored in Persepolis and Barefoot Gen).

Second, narrow the focus, go beyond your global issue. State your exact area of inquiry.

Above all say something like: my specific thesis or field of inquiry will be_________ (more specific than global issue).

Moreover, in the IO you need to talk for 10 minutes. The best way to get full marks is to write out all of the text that you are going to say. Then you will memorize that full text. It is best to memorize it because this way you can make sure you have said everything you need to say to get full marks. Also if you have it written out you could then show it to your teacher either before or after school. Dduring one of their free periods to get feedback.
