IB Math Tutor – University Admissions

This post will talk about University Admissions.

Universities look at four things when they are reviewing the application of a student: IB score, The school they went to, strength of schedule, standardized testing.

IB score: The highest IB score possible is a 45. Different universities ask for different scores. Some universities are not very competitive and do not ask for a high score, other do. Harvard for example ask for a perfect score. The lowest score the IB give is 28. So work hard on all your classes to make sure your IB score is as high as possible. Because you actually apply and get accepted to university based on your predicted score.

The teacher of your IB school will give you the score they think you are going to get. Based on the test you do. So what happens if you do not get that IB score in your final exams in May of your second year? In the IB If you are within a point or two of your predicted for most universities that is not a problem. Because for some very competitive universities that might be a problem.

The School you go to: Not all schools are equal some are very good, some are not so good. You can “rank” a school by knowing its average IB score and the IB diploma pass rate.

Stength of Schedule: Not all IB schedules are equal. Something very hard could be: math AA HL, physics HL, chemistry HL, English Lang and Lit SL, Spanish SL, economics SL. Something very easy could be: math AI SL, ESS, English HL, Spanish HL, global politics HL. The harder your schedule the better, universities know the difference between an easy and a hard schedule.

Standardized testing: the US universities have you do the SAT, some universities in Europe have entrance exams you need to do.
