Common Mistakes IB Math Students Make
Common Mistakes IB Math Students Make. In this blog post series I will talk about some things I often see students get wrong. Understanding these common problems early can make a major difference in exam performance.
First, learn what is in the formula booklet. Do not memorize things that are in the formula book, but know what the equations are for and what the variables mean. Many students know that the booklet exists, but they do not fully understand what formulas are included, what the variables represent, or when to use each formula. Knowing when to go to the formula booklet and which formula to use is an important skill.
Another common issue is calculator knowledge. Memorize the functions you will need in the calculator and how to use them. Students should know how to perform operations such as regression, normal distribution calculations, matrix operations (for math AI SL), statistics functions, graphing, and solving equations. The calculators are not intuitive so it is not likely that you will be able to figure this out during the exam.
Students also frequently struggle with certain formulas that are not provided in the formula booklet. A common example is the outlier formula in statistics:
A lower outlier is
Q_1 – 1.5 x the interquartile range
upper outlier is:
Q_3 + 1.5 x the interquartile range
Students must memorize this formula and understand how it is used to identify outliers.

Another major difficulty is calculus, especially understanding derivatives. Learn that the derivative is a function that gives the slope of the tangent line at a point. You must plug in an x value to get the slope of the tangent line at that point. The function gives the X and Y coordinates that are on the tangent line and on the function at the same time. Use the point slope form of the equation of a line in the formula booklet to get the equation of the tangent line.
