The Biggest Mistakes IB Math Students Make Before Exams. Students want to and waste time making study guides. Often, students want to go from the beginning of the syllabus all the way to the end and make sure they know all the topics, definitions, graphs. This is especially true for classes like economics, ESS, biology. But this is a very bad strategy because the syllabus has a lot of things that are there, but later in the real IB exam, they never ask about those things. So doing a study guide mostly is a large waste of time. But the students like to do it because it’s easy and it makes them feel good. One thing that is way better is opening a past paper.

Students don’t want to open the past paper and do the past paper because it shows them that they’re unable to do it, that their level is actually quite low. And they don’t feel good because they read a question and they don’t understand it or they don’t know how to do it. But this is the truth. We do not want to live in denial. We want to do past papers to see where we’re at and to practice those questions and to get good at answering them.

So the big mistake they make is not doing past papers. It is important to not do any study guides. Just go to your most recent past papers and start from the top. If there’s a question or a definition you don’t understand, then you can go to the textbook or your notes to look that up and try and memorize it. But keep going through the past papers as much as possible.
