Many students want to get good grades without putting in any time and effort, and if they are intelligent, they probably have been able to do this in their math class from 10th grade and below. Now, in the IB program, that is not going to work, and they are going to have to spend more time and effort. So there is a learning curve in educating the students regarding the level with which they need to work. They have to spend more time and effort than they are used to doing, and at first, they are going to try and not put in the time and effort, and this will mean lower grades. Try to get in the habit of coming home each day and spending at least 30 minutes going over math and seeing if you’re able to do what you had learned in class. Do the textbook level problems. Then, once you are able to do those, move on to the past paper level problems.
