This post will give an explanation of the A Level and GCSE system. How to know which practice material to use. This will also help you determine which For A Levels the first thing to ask is: Is the student going international A Levels or just A Levels?

Note: There is AS Level which is just the end of the first year of A Levels. Somes students take the AS exams others do not, it depends on the school.

Many/Most students who go to international schools (especially here in Barcelona) do the international A Levels.

Then once you know if the student is doing A Levels or international A Levels you need to ask the exam board. The main exam boards are: Pearson Edexcel, Cambridge and AQA.

Note: Edexcel used to be just called Edexcel, now it is called Pearson Edexcel.

Once you know the exam board of the student. Ask whether they are doing foundation or higher tier. Many of the courses have course codes to make things easier. For example below is an image of the cover page of: international A Level, Pearson Edexcel, Mathematics, Statistics exam, the course code is: WST01/01

So sometimes asking the course code can make things easier. But it is common that students/families do not know the course code and you will have to email the teacher at the school. They should know the course code for sure.

Between the different exam boards the courses are all very similar, so you can use material for one exam board to prepare for another mostly. But there are some minor differences in the syllabus and the way the questions are asked and the types of questions. So, to prepare before the real exam make sure to use material exactly for your exam board.
