Tutors Barcelona

This post will talk about how to be a good tutor.

First, contact the student to see what they want to work on in the first class. Students expect that the tutor be a super expert in the subject matter. Sometimes as adults we may need to refresh on some of the simpler math and physics that they do in high school and the IB program.

Second, once I know the topic the student wants to do I look through the book to make sure that I am comfortable with that material. The International Baccalaureate has a trick to it in that the tests are always harder than the book level material. So I first go through the book then I go through the past paper questions on that topic. The IB past paper questions organized by topic can be found in an online question bank that we have membership to, or on our google drive folder with all of the past papers which we have.

Next I review all of the past paper questions on that topic.

Once I have gone through those and can do them and explain them comfortably then I am ready for the first class. Every student has a different learning style and expectations that they have for the classes. Sometimes they want to go at different speeds. For this reason in the first classes I always ask the students things like: “Is this helpful”, “Is this how you want to do the class” “do you want to go faster or slower” I always ask for a lot of feedback to make sure that I am giving them the class that they want.

Students expect that we will never get anything wrong since we are experts on the material. To make sure I never get anything wrong I always have the markscheme or answer sheet open on my computer. This gives the student confidence that I know what I am doing and makes my job easier.
