IB Maths Tutor Barcelona
IB Maths Tutor Barcelona. This post will talk about the differences between the different IB math classes.
The IB program now offers four different math courses, they are:
- Analysis HL (hardest)
- Applications HL (hard)
- Analysis SL (medium)
- Applications SL (easy)
The above list is not their full names, but what the students/families commonly call the courses.
I would just like to say that every student learns at their own speed and some students will find the “easiest” math class difficult. The IB high schools here in Barcelona have high average IB scores. In order to get those scores the classes have to go through the content fast. This speed may be too much for some learners which is why they may benefit from classes with IB math experts like ourselves.
IB math Analysis HL is most similar to what was the old IB math higher level. This is the hardest math that the IB program offers. This math needs the students to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions to math problems. Since the math is similar to the old higher level students can use the past papers from this old course. It is very important to use the old past papers to study and prepare for the exam.

The Applications and Interpretations Higher Level math course is hard and it is harder than Analysis SL, but it is not that much harder. It just has some things that are tricky like: matrices, graph theory, Voronoi diagrams and some new things that were not part of the old syllabus. This math course is best suited for someone who is going to study computer science in university as the math is more mechanical. It requires less abstract thinking and is more about plugging in the numbers into an equation and getting the answer.
